1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (196 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump just reminded us that he doesn’t know a thing about anything

Spread the Knowledge

Donald Trump loves to boast about possessing unique expertise in a range of subjects that lie far beyond his grasp. For example, in November 2015, Trump told supporters at a campaign rally in Iowa: “I know more about ISIS than the generals do. Believe me!” Then, when Trump accepted the GOP nomination for president of the United States in July 2016, he declared: “Nobody knows the system better than me, which is why I alone can fix it.” More recently, Trump has insisted that he knows more about the economy than the Federal Reserve and that “nobody knows more about technology than me” while trying to explain (including to himself) exactly what he means by a “wall.”

As a self-proclaimed genius in everything, Trump often feels compelled to offer bad advice when it is neither requested nor appropriate. This is what Trump did in his first public reaction to the news that a fire was ravaging the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris on Monday. Trump tweeted, “So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!”

Although it was busy dealing with this unspeakable tragedy, France’s civil defense agency found a moment to shut down Trump’s ill-advised utterance. Responding indirectly, the agency tweeted, in English: “Hundreds of firemen of the Paris Fire Brigade are doing everything they can to bring the terrible Notre Dame fire under control. All means are being used, except for water-bombing aircrafts which, if used, could lead to the collapse of the entire structure of the cathedral.”

Similar nonsense played out when wildfires raged through California late last year. After Trump tweeted that the state is at fault for “gross mismanagement of the forests,” he proceeded to insert himself as an after-the-fact expert. He claimed that a method known as raking would have prevented the horrible situation from unfolding as it did. The only thing is, it was wildly inaccurate, as FactCheck.org explains at length. These examples show that Trump is, indeed, an expert—at being wrong.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (196 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump goes completely bonkers as House Democrats seize his financial records

Spread the Knowledge

It’s not entirely clear at what point Donald Trump figured out that House Democrats were going to seize his financial records today. Was it over the weekend, when he had one of his most bonkers Twitter meltdowns to date? Was is this morning, when he began attacking Nancy Pelosi in berserk fashion? In any case, Trump now seems to understand just how poorly today is going for him.

Even as William Barr prepares to release portions of the Mueller report in the hope of fending off the subpoena for the full report, and Donald Trump’s attorneys beg the government not to hand over his tax returns, Trump is losing some more immediate battles today. House Democrats just issued a friendly subpoena to infamous Russian money launderer Deutsche Bank, specifically seeking Trump’s financial records with Russia, and they also subpoenaed Trump’s accounting firm. These subpoenas give these institutions legal cover to cooperate, and prevent Trump from being able to do anything about it.

So maybe this was on Donald Trump’s mind this morning when he took yet another shot at trying to convince his violently deranged base to bring harm to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. Perhaps it helps explain why, when the nightmarish fire broke out at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris this afternoon, Trump inexplicably tweeted that the French should use “flying water tankers” to fight the blaze. And perhaps Trump was trying to shore up his base ahead of the bad news, when he insisted this evening that the steel industry is magically making a comeback.

In any case, it’s not difficult to parse that Donald Trump is at least partly aware of just how bad today’s news has been for him. Even as House Democrats continue to fight for the Mueller report and Trump’s tax returns, two battles they’ll win eventually but not imminently, they won today when it comes to Trump’s banking and accounting records. Deutsche Bank has been busted for facilitating the laundering of billion of dollars of Russian money into places like New York City. We’ll see what comes of it.

The Justice Department has stated that it expects to release a redacted version of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Thursday morning, says the Washington Post.

The New York Times examines how U.S. law enforcement uses information collected by Google to investigate crimes, obtaining search warrants for material from a vast Google database tracking users’ locations, reports the New York Times.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) said on Sunday night that there have been an “increase in direct threats” on her life since President Trump tweeted a video of the Muslim-American Congressman superimposed over footage of the 9/11 attacks, according to Politico.

The White House is considering adopting policies designed to curb immigration by limiting or restricting visas for nationals from countries with high rates of visa overstays, including Nigeria, Chad, Liberia, Eritrea and Sierra Leone, reports the Wall Street Journal. Meanwhile, the New York Times examined Trump adviser Stephen Miller’s role in crafting immigration policy and engineering last week’s ousting of Department of Homeland Security leadership.

The Times also published a report on China’s use of facial recognition technology to surveil the members of the Uighur population, a largely Muslim ethnic minority.

ICYMI: Last Weekend on Lawfare

Quinta Jurecic and Benjamin Wittes write that, if reports of President Trump telling Department of Homeland Security officials to stop processing asylum requests are true, it’s a pretty blatant violation of the Take Care Clause of the Constitution and his oath of office.

Jen Patja Howell shared an episode of the Lawfare Podcast in which Wittes and law professor Julian Mortenson discuss Mortenson’s forthcoming in the Columbia Law Review, which argues current understanding of the President’s executive power is completely wrong. The article is available on SSRN.

Paras Shah explored what the U.S.’s imposition of a visa ban on International Criminal Court officials may mean for how the administration interprets its obligation under the U.N. Headquarters Agreement.

Carol Saivetz examined what might happen to the Russia-Syrian government alliance as the war in Syria winds down.
