1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (196 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump is having a really bad day and he knows it

Spread the Knowledge

After we saw a thunderous torrent of bad news for Donald Trump on Wednesday and Thursday of this week, Friday ended up being rather quiet all around. Even as we wait to see how much worse the bad news gets for Trump once Monday comes around, he’s already well aware of just how badly things are going for him – and he just told us as much.

Donald Trump has now posted thirteen tweets and retweets today, and counting. Not only is that well above his average in general, it’s unprecedented for a Saturday, which is typically his quietest day by far. He’s been frantically ranting and raving about everything from the Mexican border, to the Democrats, to seeking vengeance against everyone who has helped expose his crimes. In fact Trump is still ranting as we’re writing this. So what’s going on?

On some level, Trump is clearly looking to create a distraction from his worsening scandals. It’s why he’s threatening to jam up the Mexican border in a way that will “cause traffic & commercial delays,” even as he posts the idiotic and infantile (and impeachable in its own right) declaration “Give Up, Trump-Haters.” What is this jackass, a two year old? But then that’s the point. Trump wants us focusing on this garbage, because the real news is devastating for him right now.

The question is why Donald Trump is going berserk today. The tidal wave of bad news for him – his tax returns, his banking records, the Mueller report subpoena effort – surfaced a couple days ago. So why is he reaching peak flameout today? Does he know something we don’t, when it comes to what’s about to surface in the next day or two? Or has this past week’s news simply broken him? In any case, he’s having a really bad day and he knows it.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (196 sites): Palmer Report: Paul Ryan still sucks

Spread the Knowledge

Former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan took a gratuitous swipe at Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez this week while seemingly enjoying his newfound post-congressional irrelevancy. In an interview this week in his hometown of Janesville, Wisconsin, Ryan was asked about parallels between himself and Ocasio-Cortez, given that the two were each sworn into Congress at a very young age. Ryan revealed that he met AOC shortly after her November win and that he proceeded to offer her advice: “Take it easy, just watch things for a while, don’t ruffle, you know, see how it works first.” Ryan then joined the audience in laughter as he lamented that “I don’t think she really listened to a thing I said.”

Fortunately, AOC did indeed not listen to a thing Ryan said. Instead, she chose to move forward immediately to do the job for which she was elected and fight for what she believes in. As Senate Majority Leader Mitch Connell might put it, “Nevertheless, she persisted.” The reality is that no one needs to “see how it works first” because we have already seen how the whole system has not worked under Ryan’s feckless speakership. The blue wave that came crashing ashore in November was a cry for change, demanding action, transparency, and accountability. Ryan wielded the powerful Speaker’s gavel for two years of Trump’s presidency, yet he failed to stand up to the chief executive in any meaningful way.

After retiring from Congress altogether, Ryan handed the gavel to Nancy Pelosi, who did not forget that Congress is a co-equal branch of government under the Constitution. Like AOC, Pelosi also knows better than to listen to anything Ryan says. In just a few short months, people like Pelosi and AOC have reminded us that our Constitution established a system of government that is meant to operate under the principle of checks and balances.

At another point in the interview, Paul Ryan, who ran unsuccessfully for Vice President alongside Mitt Romney in 2012, got a question about his future political aspirations. “When are you going to run for president?” the interviewer asked. After some nervous chuckling, Ryan quipped, “I’m smarter than that.” Finally, he said something worth listening to.

Putin’s press secretary claimed a “far greater” portion of Americans than Russians want to emigrate from their home country. He’s wrong. — Meduza

Mladen Antonov / AFP / Scanpix / LETA

The claim

On April 5, Russia’s presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov was asked to comment on a Gallup report that showed one in five adult Russians would like to emigrate elsewhere. The figure was the highest recorded since 2007. Peskov responded as follows:

“These surveys are carried out by various companies in various countries, and that figure is far from the highest. It’s a typical process. Some people prefer a more mobile way of life, and some people prefer a less mobile one. That makes this an absolutely standard topic for sociological research.”

Do Americans want to emigrate more than Russians do?

No. Gallup’s Russian survey was part of a global research project that asked residents of various countries the same question: “Ideally, if you had the opportunity, would you like to move permanently to another country, or would you prefer to continue living in this country?” The survey’s responses from the United States were published in January. There, 16 percent of respondents reported a desire to emigrate, which is also a ten-year record.

In short, a single set of surveys concluded that a smaller portion of Americans than Russians expressed a desire to emigrate.

Was Peskov right that Russia’s statistic isn’t the highest?

Yes. The average portion of the national population in all the countries surveyed that would emigrate given the chance was recorded at 15 percent. However, one fifth is approximately equal to the average portion of those who would emigrate from EU countries (21 percent). In Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa, the portion of residents who would emigrate is higher. The global survey included 13 countries where nearly half of respondents or more expressed a wish to leave.

Have Russians begun considering emigration more frequently in recent years?

It’s unlikely. Gallup’s survey showed that only 7 percent of respondents wished to emigrate in 2014, and since then, that figure has nearly doubled. However, Gallup’s data contradicts the results of surveys run by independent and state-owned organizations within Russia.

The state-owned Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) and the independent Levada Center conduct annual surveys that include the question “Would you like to move abroad permanently or not?” The results of those surveys have been relatively stable over the past ten years; at least, they have not multiplied. However, while VCIOM’s figures show that 10 – 13 percent of Russians would emigrate, Levada’s range is more like 15 – 22 percent.

Russia’s cyber assault on Australia has already begun

Make no mistake.

Russia wanted a bitterly divided America and over the past three years it got exactly what it wanted.

Whether the Mueller Report found collusion or no collusion, the end result is the same — a political chasm in the United States, with opposing sides more angry, more bitter and more turned against themselves than at any time in recent memory.

Huge numbers of American people have become so paranoid that they no longer trust the institutions that made their democracy great.

The Russians must be pleased with themselves. Their enemy has become divided against itself and US alliances around the world have become strained.

It seemed to happen so easily, and so quickly. And if you think that Australia is immune to a similar assault, I’ve got news for you.

The war on Australia has already begun.

Russia has been fighting an electronic war causing division in the US.Source:AFP

So how did America get to this point?

It’s always had its share of divisions. Its civil war saw hundreds of thousands of its citizens die. Issues of race, religion, culture have always bubbled away. And as in any democracy, there’s always been a contest of ideas. But the internet age has given American enemies the ability to amplify and weaponise these divisions.

The first we knew of it was just before the 2016 election, when it was revealed that hackers with an affiliation to the Russian military intelligence service hacked Democrat party computer systems and emails.

But hacking was just the beginning.

What Russia really wanted was for Americans to be at war with themselves.

A divided and confused America is a reduced threat. So how could they achieve it?

The Russians fought an electronic war, stirring controversy and causing division largely through fanning the flames of conflicts online through social media.

The Russians realised that if they could push one side or another on divisive issues such as race, gun control, policing, religion, LGBT issues, climate change and more they would exacerbate internal discord in the US.

It wasn’t that these issues didn’t exist already in the US, but social media was weaponised to whip debates into a frenzy.

The fires of division were already burning and the Russian intervention poured petrol on them.

The notorious Russian Internet Research Agency fabricated stories pushing one extreme side of the debate aggravating the situation in America.Source:AP

How did they do it?

Largely through the work of the now notorious Russian Internet Research Agency which bought ads, used bots, troll farms, created meme accounts and drove traffic to fake news websites with completely fabricated and often outrageous stories pushing one extreme side of a debate or another. The latter was the original fake news, before Donald Trump co-opted the term for his own means.

It was no small operation.

According to The Disinformation Report which was provided to the US Senate Select Committee on Intelligence by New Knowledge, the Russian campaign reached 126 million people on Facebook. 10.4 million tweets were posted to Twitter. More than a thousand videos were uploaded to YouTube. And 20 million users were reached on Instagram.

The net effect was not only were Americans at war with each other, they were becoming paranoid too. Part of the intention of this information warfare was to have American people become worried, nervous and distrustful of the institutions that they’d reliably looked to for years: Election systems, political parties, the courts, the police and even the media.

Throughout his Presidency, Donald Trump has done little to restore the faith in these.

Moreover, he’s recognised the short-term political benefit of empowering one side of a deeply divided nation.

But that’s America’s problem right? We’ve got nothing to worry about? The same thing couldn’t happen Down Under?

News flash, it already has. And the same playbook is being used.

Fears are growing across the Western world after Australia’s main political parties fell victim to a cyber attack just months from the federal election.Source:Supplied

Let’s start with the hacking.

In February of this year, it was confirmed that a “sophisticated state actor” had conducted a cyber attack on Australia’s major political parties.

If our intelligence agencies know who carried out the hack, they’re certainly not saying, but there are a relatively small number of nations who have the capability, and fewer too who could be the suspect. Among them are Russia and China.

That’s not all though. A year ago this month, 400 Australian companies were attacked as part of a coordinated hack, believed to be attempting to weaken critical infrastructure. Our allies the UK and US suggested that Russian government supported hackers were involved.

That’s the hacking. And just like the Americans we’ve been hit with electronic warfare on social media too.

Last year, researchers Tom Sear and Michael Jensen published a report for The Conversation finding that around 5000 of the tweets published by accounts operated by Russia’s Internet Research Agency mentioned Australia, MH17, or the Australian politics hashtag #AusPol.

The activity involving Australia increased when our government responded to the downing of MH17 and once again when Australian fighter aircraft were flying over Syria.

The report concluded: “The attacks on the 2016 US election have provided adversaries with a playbook to engage in operations against countries like Australia.”

It came as dozens of US companies and government agencies were targeted by Iranian and Russian hackers.Source:News Corp Australia

We’re small fry though compared to the United States. What interest could Russia, China or any other adversary have in such a small place like ours?

One reason is of course our alliance with the US. Any of its allies and security partners will certainly be considered a threat.

But we are also a regional player in the Asia-Pacific and the decisions and alliances that our government makes do have an impact on other nations, their economies and their aspirations.

If it’s possible to divide or weaken us, attempts will likely be made to do so. The success of the meddling in the United States shows how easy it can be. The playbook can be copied and used by anyone, anywhere.

At the moment, here in Australia, there are vigorous national debates on gun control, immigration, climate change, far right extremism and many more.

We also have an election coming up.

The conditions are ripe for the type of meddling seen in the US and we ought to be aware of it.

We need to pay particular attention to what we’re seeing, sharing and arguing about on social media and consider the consequences of it when we do.

When extreme views on either side of politics are ventilated and debated, often in inverse proportion to their veracity or popular support, are we better or worse off?

And who would really benefit from a bitterly divided Australia?

Not Australians, that’s for sure.

In testimony before Congress, Christopher Wray told Rep. José E. President Donald Trump has down played threats of white nationalism and white supremacy, while speaking from the White House after the New Zealand terror attack Trump said he doesn’t think it’s a serious problem. Trump previously clashed with and eventually fired former FBI director James Comey. Height of white supremacy in the U.S. and abroad might not yet have been reached.

Michael_Novakhov shared this story .

Special Counsel Mueller will be leaving the DOJ in “coming days” — Quartz

Michael_Novakhov shared this story .

Robert Mueller, the special counsel who spent nearly two years investigating Donald Trump’s links to Russian interference in the 2016 US election, will be leaving the Department of Justice in “coming days” a spokesman said.

Mueller, who spent 674 days on the investigation before handing a 400 page report to attorney general William Barr, “will be concluding his service within the coming days,” DOJ spokesman Peter Carr told Quartz today. A “small staff remains to assist in closing the operations of the office,” Carr said. He said he didn’t have more information on what day, exactly, Mueller would depart, or whether his departure could coincide with Barr’s promise to distribute a redacted version of the report before mid-April.

Mueller, a long-time civil servant, was the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2001 to 2013; he left a private law firm to conduct the special investigation in May of 2017, after Trump abruptly fired FBI head James Comey. Carr, who served as the spokesman for the special counsel’s office since the beginning of the investigation, has returned to the department’s main Office of Public Affairs.

Even though Mueller’s departure is imminent, huge questions remain about what the investigation actually found. Barr’s four page summary of the report, made public March 24, has been criticized by Mueller associates as not accurately depicting the content of the report, and omitting “alarming” details that it unearthed, the Washington Post reports. The White House claims that the report “completely exonerates” Trump, despite the fact that Barr’s summary specifically quotes Mueller as writing “this report does not conclude that the President committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him.”

The House Judiciary Committee voted April 3 to authorize subpoenas for the full, unredacted report and its underlying evidence. Barr, and possibly Mueller, could be called to testify in front of the committee. In previous special investigations into US presidential misconduct, Congress ultimately got access to special prosecutors’ reports and the underlying information.

Senate Republicans, meanwhile, have blocked a measure to make the Mueller report public five times.

As questions grow about what, exactly, the lengthy investigation uncovered about the extent of Russian meddling in the 2016 election, and how it could be prevented in 2020, there’s plenty of people asking: Why doesn’t Mueller just come out publicly and clear things up?

After all, former FBI officials including Comey and deputy director Andrew McCabe, who was fired days before his pension kicked in after a decades-long government career, embarked on media blitzes after their departures. They wrote books about their experience and talked them up to cable news networks and morning talk shows.

Even after Mueller departs the DOJ, he’s unlikely to launch into a round of interviews with news media on the investigation, or even the unique role he’s played in America’s democracy. First of all, that’s not his style, former colleagues told Quartz.

And while any contract Mueller signed with the Department of Justice to conduct the investigation is unlikely to have a specific non-disclosure agreement that prevents him from discussing the investigation publicly at all, he’s still ethically prohibited from divulging privileged information, such as information about the internal workings of the executive branch that is normally protected from disclosure by the common law principle known as “deliberative process privilege,” or anything that came from grand jury testimony. Carr didn’t respond to questions about Mueller’s plans after he departs, or whether he would be able to speak freely about the non-classified parts of the investigation.

MUELLER REPORT UNDER SCRUTINY: The Mueller report – and everyone involved in its handling, from Attorney General William Barr to Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his investigators – are under scrutiny as Democrats demand that Barr release the full, unredacted report … On Thursday, the attorney general – who is expected to release entire Mueller report, with redactions, by mid-April – defended his handling of the 400-page document, saying it contains sensitive grand jury material.

Meanwhile, amid reports that Mueller’s findings were more damaging to President Trump than Barr indicated, Fox News has learned Republican lawmakers had concerns about Mueller’s investigators before the probe ended. Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., alerted Barr to what they described as the “selective” use of emails in Mueller court filings — as well as potential “improper political influence, misconduct, and mismanagement” in the FBI’s original Russia probe.

EX-TRUMP FIXER MAKES LAST-MINUTE PLEA TO DEMS: With a little more than a month to go until he is slated to report to prison, former Trump fixer Michael Cohen is asking House Democrats to help keep him out of the big house … In a letter sent to lawmakers Thursday, Cohen’s legal team said he was still sorting through documents in his personal files that might be of interest to House Democrats investigating President Trump, including emails, voice recordings, images and other documents on a hard drive. The letter was sent to a who’s-who of Trump opponents in the Democratic Party, including Reps. Adam Schiff of California, Jerry Nadler of New York, Maxine Waters of California and Elijah Cummings of Maryland.

HOWARD SCHULTZ: TRUMP WINS RE-ELECTION IF SANDERS IS HIS OPPONENT – Potential independent 2020 White House contender Howard Schultz predicted outright that President Trump will win re-election if Democrats nominate a self-described socialist like Bernie Sanders, during Fox News’ “America’s Election HQ” Town Hall Thursday night in Kansas City, Mo. … At the town hall event, co-hosted by Fox News’ Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, Schultz separately denied he would play a “spoiler” in the race — and suggested instead that someone like Sanders could unwittingly play that role. He addressed a variety of topics, such as the immigration crisis at the U.S-Mexico border, allegations of inappropriate conduction leveled by seven women against Joe BidenTrump’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and more. CHICAGO VERSUS SMOLLETT: Chicago is vowing a civil suit against Jussie Smollett after the “Empire” actor “refused to reimburse” the city for the cost of investigating his controversial case … In a statement obtained by Fox News, the city’s law department said that Smollett, 36, “has refused to reimburse the City of Chicago for the cost of police overtime spent investigating his false police report on Jan. 29, 2019.” The statement said that the law department “is now drafting a civil complaint that will be filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County.”

SUSPECT ARRESTED IN QUADRUPLE SLAYINGS: A “person of interest” who was detained Thursday in connection with four workplace murders in North Dakota earlier this week has now been arrested and charged with the killings, authorities said … Four people were found shot and stabbed Monday inside family-owned company RJR Maintenance and Management. The suspect, identified as Chad Isaak, 44, of Washburn, N.D., lived in a trailer park managed by RJR Maintenance and Management. Police did not speculate on a motive.

Did Trump Simply Get Rolled by the Russians?

Michael_Novakhov shared this story from Comments on: New Hints of the Mueller Report: Did Trump Simply Get Rolled by the Russians?.

Despite the fact that William Barr had made public comments denigrating the Mueller investigation and clearly auditioned for the job with a spurious memo suggesting that it was almost impossible for a president to obstruct justice, he was confirmed as Donald Trump’s new attorney general with little difficulty. After what had happened with Jeff Sessions, it was understood that Trump would never again stand for an AG recusing himself from any investigation of the president. So everyone knew that Robert Mueller’s report on Russian interference in the 2016 election would be in the hands of someone who was unlikely to be an honest broker.

Nonetheless, most of us gave Barr the benefit of the doubt. I wrote about Watergate special prosecutor Leon Jaworski, who had been a conservative supporter of Richard Nixon. He was coerced into taking the job by White House chief of staff Alexander Haig, who told him, “We need you, Leon” — assuming he would be loyal to the president. When Jaworski saw the evidence against Nixon, however, he was appalled and moved forward with the investigation. I thought maybe that could happen with Barr too.

I should have known better. Barr was a very political attorney general during George H.W. Bush’s administration, recommending pardons for all the guilty players in the Iran-Contra case, showing that he wasn’t going to be one of those weaklings who saw the Nixon pardon as setting a bad example for the country. I should have realized that this wasn’t a case of someone who’d spent too much time watching Sean Hannity and was slightly out of it. Barr’s been a rock-solid right-winger for decades.

Never miss the news and analysis you care about.

I characterized Barr’s initial four-page summary of the Mueller report as an elegant little political document and it was. It elicited exactly the response he and the White House wanted. He validated Trump’s slogan, “No Collusion, No Obstruction” while cleverly obscuring the fact that there is obviously much more to that story. After a couple of weeks of careful parsing and reconsideration of the implications by the press and various experts, Barr has now lost control of the storyline. He is promising to deliver the full report after he redacts whatever he deems necessary, but because of the game he’s been playing, there is no longer much trust that he’s acting in good faith.

Unlike Ken Starr’s investigations of the Whitewater and Monica Lewinsky scandals, the Mueller team didn’t use friendly members of the press to pressure witnesses and try their cases in the court of public opinion. In fact they said nothing at all outside the courtroom. But now that the investigation is over and the attorney general has taken it upon himself to summarize their conclusions they have reportedly begin to express their distress about how he’s handled that.

Numerous news outlets have confirmed that members of Mueller’s team say that Barr has mischaracterized the evidence of obstruction of justice, which by all accounts is substantial.

They have also told associates that they carefully prepared summaries for different sections of the report, assuming they would be released to the public. Those summaries should not require all this concern from Barr about redactions. This certainly comports with many experts’ assumptions about how such a report would be organized. While Barr and the Justice Department are now saying that the summaries are labeled as containing grand jury and other confidential information, therefore requiring careful review and redactions, many professionals have suggested that’s just pro forma.

I think we all knew that the question of obstruction was going to be a problem for President Trump, simply because so much of it was happening right out in the open. But according to NBC News, it’s not just that issue that has the Mueller team agitated. The “collusion” case is also being somewhat misrepresented. The special counsel decided not to charge Trump or his campaign with conspiring with the Russian government in its election interference, but that is far from the whole story. Members of the team say that “the findings paint a picture of a campaign whose members were manipulated by a sophisticated Russian intelligence operation.”

I have long been willing to believe that Trump and his minions were simply so unethical, corrupt and uninformed that they were easy marks for the Russian election sabotage campaign. We know that they behaved idiotically when Russians approached them. Donald Trump Jr. writing an emails saying, “if it’s what you say, I love it!” upon hearing that Russian emissaries want to give him dirt on Hillary Clinton as “part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump” is not the language of a sophisticated conspirator. It’s almost as if they were testing to see if Junior was even sentient. But that doesn’t get him or Jared Kushner, Paul Manafort or Donald Trump himself off the hook. This isn’t a game. Trump is president of the United States.

Trump and his team were almost certainly compromised by the lies they told about the Trump Tower Moscow negotiations. Trump knew that could be revealed at any time and his obsequious behavior toward Vladimir Putin the could easily be interpreted as bowing to an unspoken threat. Trump is conversant in blackmail threats, as we all know. We also know that he pays up when he deems it necessary.

Mueller found that none of this was prosecutable and it is vital we find out why he reached that conclusion. But to say that there was nothing there amounts to sweeping some of the worst judgment calls in the history of presidential campaigns under the carpet. And that’s really saying something.

These were outrageous decisions regardless of the criminal liability or lack thereof. I’m not sure if rank stupidity and reckless greed qualify as high crimes and misdemeanors but we should probably know the whole story before deciding about that. Even if Trump and his close advisers were suckered by the “Russian election interference activities” it’s quite clear that once Trump realized that the FBI and the intelligence community thought he might have done something illegal, he tried to cover it up. If that’s so, it’s not William Barr’s place to make the decision about criminal obstruction of justice. If the Department of Justice has concluded that it cannot charge a sitting president with a crime, it cannot clear one of wrongdoing either. It’s up to the Congress to decide what to do about Donald Trump. It seems as though the Mueller investigators agree.

Life is so much harder with the new guy! Angela Merkel gives Barack Obama a very warm welcome in Germany amid cooling Trans-Atlantic relations with Trump

  • German Chancellor hugged Barack Obama during a visit to Cologne and Berlin
  • They had meeting at Chancellery where they discussed Trans-Atlantic relations
  • Comes as Merkel/Trump relations at low over Germany’s Nato spending amount

Angel Merkel is a leader that has always made her feelings clear.

And now it seems the German chancellor cannot hide her feelings towards US presidents.

Ms Merkel, 64, played host to former US president Barack Obama in Berlin today – and the pair were spotted in a warm embrace after a meeting at the German Chancellery.

This is in stark contrast to the reception she has given President Donald Trump in the past, with an awkward stare across a table being a recent example.

Obama, 57, has even said Ms Merkel was one of his ‘favourite partners’ during his time in office and his last international trip as president was to Germany in November 2016.

A year later, the former Democratic Party leader told a crowd in Berlin of the ‘outstanding work’ across the world Ms Merkel had undertaken.

Obama arrived in Germany yesterday and made a speech to 14,000 people at the World Leadership Summit in Lanxess Arena, Cologne, German newspaper Bild reported.

Today, the pair were believed to have discussed Trans-Atlantic relations during the hour and a half exchange – and Ms Merkel showed her appreciation with a hug and a kiss on Obama’s cheek.

It comes as a turbulent relationship has evolved between Germany and the US, with President Trump lashing out at Ms Merkel for lowering the country’s military spending to below Nato targets.

The latest German budget plans, revealed last month, showed defence spending drop well below the two per cent of GDP expected from Nato members.

US ambassador Richard Grenell said the cuts were a ‘worrisome signal’, while President Trump repeatedly accused Germany of freeloading on US military might.

But Ms Merkel rejected the criticism, saying Germany will not cut foreign aid to raise military spending.

And this month, President Trump – while complaining about how Germany does not pay its fair share – claimed his father was from the country.

Trump repeated an error he has made in public at least twice, this time adding to the story of his father’s supposed European birth.

He made the claim while seated next to Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the Norwegian politician who has publicly praised the president for encouraging allies to spend more on defence.

The president said: ‘I have great respect for Angela and I have great respect for the country.’

He added: ‘My father is German, right? Was German.

‘Born in a very wonderful place in Germany, so I have a great feeling for Germany.’

But Fred Trump, the president’s father, was born in New York – it was his grandfather Friederich Trump who was born in the German village of Kallstadt.
